Hairy Crab
James Kellerman
Its hairy crab season here, so off to the restaurant we went! Quite good, very messy for me anyway. the big question I had was did it taste like scrambled egg because it looked like scrambled egg or if I had closed my eyes would it have tasted like hairy crab. Its all about perception and expectation.
And now for some science.
Pilumnus fissifrons
Whereas many crabs will attempt to escape when disturbed or captured, hairy crabs play dead, curling their legs up to look as inconspicuous as possible. Their camouflage makes them difficult to see even when rocks are turned.
Apparently the male crab is at its best in Oct, and the female in Nov.
